Sandra AffenitoSandra G. Affenito, Ph.D., R.D., CD-N, dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences and professor of Nutrition, is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association (JADA). Recently, she co-authored and published a full-length peer-reviewed scientific journal article, "Ethnic Differences in Food Sources of Vitamin D in Adolescent American Girls: the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Growth and Health Study" in Nutrition Research.



Dennis Barone, Ph.D., professor of English and American Studies, published the following essays: "'The Same Theme, with Variations:' New Approaches to John Fante" in Voices in Italian Americana; "To Struggle for a Place at the Table: Italian American Protestants in Italy" in Italian Americana; "By Twos and by Threes: The Italian Baptist Church at Monson, Massachusetts" in American Baptist Quarterly; and America /Trattabili, a study of Italian American narrative published by Bordighera Press.

Cheryl BraxtonCheryl Braxton, Ed.D., director of continuing education and community outreach, and Mary-Jane Eisen, Ed.D., assistant professor of Psychology, co-hosted a regional meeting of the Prior Learning Assessment Network at Saint Joseph College in October. They continue to teach a course they developed in 2009, Career Development and Prior Learning Assessment.




Kevin Callahan, Ph.D., associate professor of History, delivered a paper entitled "Sociability and Public Speaking Tours of Leaders of the Second International, 1889-1914" at the sixth international Peace History conference in Miami, Fla. He also served as commentator of the panel, Race, Civilization, and Peace — Centenary Perspectives on the First Universal Races Congress of 1911.

Joanne Cunard, Ph.D., professor of Education, received the 2011 International Reading Association's (IRA) Celebrate Literacy Award given in partnership with the Connecticut Reading Association (CRA). Dr. Cunard was honored for her significant literacy contributions to the field of reading and to the organization on the local and state level. She recently wrote Keys to Success: Connecticut's Birth to Grade 12 Literacy Plan for the State Literacy Team.

Ron DeGray, Ph.D., faculty emeritus in Mathematical Sciences, published "Promoting the Study of Complex Systems in K-16 Curricula" in the Proceedings of the New England Complex Systems Institute. He also presented the paper at the Eighth International Conference on Complex Systems in Quincy, Mass. Since his retirement, Dr. DeGray has been studying transportation engineering at the University of Connecticut and is an advocate for promoting multi-modal and inter-modal transportation systems. He is a member of the New England Complex Systems Institute, the Mathematical Association of America, the American Mathematics Society, the National Association of Railroad Passengers, and the Congress for New Urbanism. He is also an avid bicyclist, serves on the board of Glastonbury Bikeways, and volunteers for Glastonbury Partners in Planting.

Judith DurhamJudith Durham, Ph.D., APRN, associate professor of Counseling, traveled to Bhutan with the National Board of Certified Counselors International Division to establish the Profession of Counseling.





Tai Feaster and Jessica Miller, residence coordinators, received the Connecticut State Program of the Year Award from Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education for a project they collaborated on with the University of Hartford, entitled Tunnel of Oppression.

Kathryn Gaffney, M.S. '11, manager of publications and design, earned her master's degree in Management from SJC in May and was inducted into Sigma Beta Delta Business Honor Society in October.

Lorrie Greenhouse Gardella, J.D., M.S.W., A.C.S.W., professor of Social Work and associate dean of the School of Graduate and Professional Studies, published The Life and Thought of Louis Lowy: Social Work Through the Holocaust (Syracuse University Press). Drawing from oral narrative histories of Lowy and three other survivors, the biography explores Lowy's activities during the Holocaust as formative experiences in his social work career. Professor Gardella, Natalie Dearing, Pharm.D., R.Ph., assistant professor of Pharmacy, and Lucinda Canty, M.S.N., assistant professor of Nursing, presented a workshop entitled "Faces of Disparity: Promoting Multicultural Health Equity in Social Work Education," at the Council of Social Work Education Annual Program Meeting, in Atlanta, Ga.

Steven JarettSteven B. Jarett, MPA, CPA, Chair of the department of Business Administration, attended the American Accounting Association's Annual Meeting in Denver, Colo. in August. He also completed all continuing professional education requirements for recertification as a CPA on June 30, 2011.

 

 

 

 

Marie Kulesza, M.S., CPA, assistant professor of Business Administration, published "CPA Firm Owners: The Reluctant Retirees" in the May/June 2011 issue of Connecticut CPA. She presented "Succession Planning" at the New England Graduate Accounting Studies Conference held at Saint Joseph College in June 2011. Professor Kulesza was also appointed trustee of the Education Trust Fund of the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants and will chair the Student Outreach and Career Awareness Committee. In September, she appeared in a Fox CT News report regarding Bank of America fees.

Melissa Marcucci, Ph.D., assistant professor of Biology, was named one of The Hartford Business Journal's "Forty Under Forty."

Madeline Perez, Ph.D., M.S.W., M.Phil., assistant professor of Social Work and Latino Community Practice, joined the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Women's Educational and Legal Fund. She collaborated with Dr. Karen Tejada of the University of Hartford and the staff at Billings Forge Community Works to create the Frog Hollow, Te Escuchamos (We're Listening) Project, which captures the voices and experiences of community members. Dr. Perez also chaired the Caritas Conference, the department's signature event scheduled for May 19, along with alumnae/i Loida Reyes, M.S.W., '92; Isabel Logan, M.S.W., '96; Lynnette Colon-Ayala, M.A., '09; and Associate Dean Lorrie Greenhouse Gardella, J.D., M.S.W., A.C.S.W.

Pamela Trotman Reid, Ph.D., president, won two significant awards this fall: the 2011 Polaris Award from Leadership Greater Hartford, recognizing individuals who provide a powerful light and example for others to follow; and the 2011 Maria Miller Stewart Award from the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund (CWEALF), honoring women who made a difference in the lives of women and girls in Connecticut. She served as keynote speaker at the "Women of FIRE" Awards luncheon at The Hartford Club. Dr. Reid was a guest speaker at the College Summit Connecticut Region's Peer Leader Awards Ceremony in New Haven and at the Martha & Mary Guild, a women's group at St. Justin Church in Hartford. Additionally, Dr. Reid was a panelist at the New England HERC (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium) Diversity Recruitment Conference and General Assembly, where she spoke on "Engaging Top Level Leadership in Diversity Recruitment Initiatives and at the Connecticut Women in Higher Education (CTWHE) Networking Breakfast meeting, where she spoke on "Women's Paths to Success in Higher Education." In October, Dr. Reid served as lead author (along with Ellen Vole and Margaret L. Kern) of "Wives of College and University Presidents: Identity, Privacy, and Relationships," published in Psychology of Women Quarterly.

Wayne SteelyWayne Steeley, Ph.D., professor of Spanish and dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, presented "Talk Like an All-Star: Tracking and Teaching Authentic Use of Sports Jargon with the Corpus of Contemporary English" for the Asociación Nacional Universitaria de Profesores de Inglés International TESOL Conference in San José del Cabo, Mexico.




Elizabeth C. Vozzola, Ph.D., professor of Psychology, compiled the entry on Moral Development for the new Oxford University Press Oxford Bibliography Online project with Sharon Lamb, president of the Association for Moral Education and professor of Mental Health at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. Dr. Vozzola also presented "Do Representations of Attachment to Romantic Partners in Emerging Adulthood Influence Attitudes about and Perceptions of The Twilight Saga?" with coauthors Lance Garmon of Salisbury University and Rebecca Glover of University of North Texas at the Emerging Adult Conference in Providence, R.I.

Raymie H. Wayne, Ph.D., J.D., M.S.W., chair and associate professor in the department of Social Work and Latino Community Practice, published "Book Review: Using the Law" in Best Practices in Mental Health: An International Journal. She was also elected president of the National Association of Social Workers, Connecticut Chapter, and became a corporator for Connecticut Community Care Inc.

Kathleen M. Whitbread, Ph.D.Kathleen Whitbread, Ph.D., associate professor of Education, received an Outstanding Professional Service Award from the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress at their annual convention in November.
