Supplemental Instructional Program
The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program at Saint Joseph College is modeled after a nationally recognized academic assistance program that improves student learning and performance in subjects that have been traditionally some of the most challenging. Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) are undergraduates who have been recommended by faculty as model students in their discipline. SILs are trained in such topics as instructional strategies and learning styles throughout the semester.
SILs attend all class sessions, read texts, communicate regularly with professors, and facilitate 2-3 study tables (SI sessions) per week. Students of all ability levels participate in SI sessions, and are encouraged to attend as often as they wish. The goal of SI is to bolster students' academic success by combining content with study strategies, note taking techniques, test preparation, and other key learning tools.
Students who participate in SI sessions tend to earn higher grades in their most challenging courses. Currently, Supplemental Instruction is offered in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry of the Human Body, and Pathopharmacology.
