Frequently Asked Questions about the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE)

FAQ's are a collection of questions from students and answers from us. Call or e-mail us if your question or concern is not yet addressed here: cae@sjc.edu; 860.231.5514

How long is a typical tutorial?
Depending on your needs, tutorials will last up to one hour.

How many appointments can I make?
As many as you like. However, at busy times of the semester, we prefer that you not book too many appointments in advance.

Does my paper have to be finished before I meet with a writing tutor?
No. We work with students at all stages of the writing process, from initial brainstorming to final draft. It is a good idea to bring to the appointment assignment sheets, source material, your notes, and all of your drafts. You may bring your laptop if you choose.

Are CAE services free?
Yes.

What are the credentials of the CAE tutors?
Our professional tutors hold bachelors or masters degrees in areas such as Nursing, Social Work, Science, Counseling, and Writing.  Our undergraduate peer tutors have been recommended by faculty to provide content tutoring and to lead study tables.

How do I make an appointment?
Call 860.231.5514 (off-campus) or ext. 5514 (on-campus). You may also drop in at the CAE reception office (Mercy Hall, room 244) or e-mail us at caeappt@sjc.edu. E-mail and voice mail requests will be confirmed.

Is writing tutoring available online?
Yes. Online tutoring appointments are available via Skype.  Call 231-5514 for details.

Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes. We ask that you cancel at least 24 hours in advance so we can schedule another student in the slot. Monday appointments should be canceled by 4:00 p.m. Friday.

Where is the CAE located?
Mercy Hall, second floor, rooms 241-250 (reception: room 244)

Are you open in the evenings? On weekends?
Yes. During the fall and spring semesters, we are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 7:30 p.m. and on Wednesdays until 8:00 p.m. We are also open from 9-2 on Saturdays for writing tutoring. Please call ahead to check Intersession and summer evening hours.
