Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Management

The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Management is oriented toward those who wish to begin or advance their careers in healthcare management. The four courses that make up this program provide a thorough understanding of the nature of high-performance healthcare organizations in which the human factor, enhanced by technology, is a key to success. The Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Management consists of 12 credits in an accelerated cohort format.

The curriculum of the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Management will provide students with the knowledge and skills to:

  • Develop strategies, engage in strategic planning and establish policy in healthcare organizations;
  • Develop and build new approaches to the industry;
  • Work with and manage project teams in various segments of the industry;
  • Develop the strong organizational and management skills needed to function and lead in a complex, multi-level organization;
  • Develop the problem solving skills needed to overcome the challenges of the multi-level organization

MGMT 516 Managing Healthcare Delivery Systems (3 credits)
MGMT 517 Legal Aspects in Healthcare Management (3 credits)
MGMT 518 Third Party Payer Systems and Managed Care (3 credits)
MGMT 519 Joint Ventures and Alliances in Healthcare Management (3 credits)

Course Descriptions for the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Systems Management:

MGMT 516     Managing Healthcare Delivery Systems     (3 credits)
This course explores the skills and knowledge needed today and in the future to effectively manage in the healthcare delivery system. Covering the many components of the system, such as hospitals, ambulatory facilities, community-based services, long-term care, and private practice, topic areas will include but not be limited to financial, operational, regulatory, and clinical aspects of management. Factors such as reimbursement, technology, staffing, leadership, organizational design and complexity, and for-profit and not-for-profit aspects of the system will also be covered in relation to the system as we know it today and as it will impact the future.

MGMT 517     Legal Aspects in Healthcare Management     (3 credits)
This course will review the complex legal problems related to Healthcare Systems management. Topic areas will cover such issues as care, technology, methods of care, and liability regarding care. The course will also address management issues such as risk management, corporate restructuring, government regulations, and organized labor.

MGMT 518     Third Party Payer Systems and Managed Care     (3 credits)
Managed Care and various payer programs have had a profound impact on the entire healthcare delivery system. This course will focus on various payer systems, the future of managed care, and how these systems will impact access, availability, and quality. We will also cover methods of managing healthcare systems in this environment.

MGMT 519     Joint Ventures and Alliances in Healthcare System Management     (3 credits)
Healthcare is a complex business that lends itself to joint ventures and alliances. In this course, we will examine the effect of intersecting, crossover technologies on healthcare management by exploring case studies. We will study the healthcare delivery system in this country in general terms and then spend time on various sub-industries of interest, like drug development and managed care. We will delve into the management implications of joint ventures and alliances, focusing on such topics as marketing, operations, human resources, finance, and stakeholder value. Students will be asked to analyze a recent healthcare-related merger transaction with the tools discussed in this class.

Continuation in the Master of Science in Management Program

Student who would like to continue on to receive their Master of Science in Management Degree will need to complete a total of 36 credit hours:

  • Twelve (12) of these credits will have been earned in the Graduate Certificate Program in Healthcare System Management.
  • Twenty four (24) credits will be earned from the required Core Management courses.
