MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CHEMISTRY

The Saint Joseph College graduate program in chemistry is a part-time program designed for working professionals. It allows them to enhance their skills in the chemical sciences and to prepare for professional advancement with flexible options that work with their schedules. Students can work toward their graduate degree part-time and many courses are offered online or in the evening.

Students select from a thesis or non-thesis option, each of which results in 30 graduate-level credits and a Master of Science degree. Courses include Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Introduction to the Chemistry of Cancer, and Organometallic Chemistry. The program also provides high school teachers with unique opportunities to broaden their application of chemistry by taking courses such as Planetary Chemistry, Environmental Geochemistry, Biochemistry of Cancer and Biochemistry of Obesity.

Matriculation Requirements

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in Chemistry or a closely related discipline with a science GPA of 2.8 or higher, or completion of six credits in the chemistry graduate program with grades of B- or better
  2. Two letters of recommendation
  3. A sealed official undergraduate transcript
  4. A completed planned program of study following an interview with the program director

Program Requirements

  Thesis option Non-Thesis Option
Required courses 3 courses, 9 credits 3 courses, 9 credits
Chemistry electives 3 courses, 9 credits 5 courses, 15 credits
Thesis 6 credits
Other electives 2 courses, 6 credits 2 courses, 6 credits
Total 30 credits 30 credits

In addition, all students in the non-thesis program must pass a written comprehensive examination after having completed 24 credits in chemistry. Students in the thesis program are required to give a public presentation of their thesis with an oral examination to follow.  The thesis committee which administers the oral examination is compromised of three faculty from SJC. All students must fill out a Comprehensive Exam Application.
