International Students

International students form an important part of the student body at St. John's College, bringing valuable and varied perspectives to class discussions. Applicants should be aware, however, that all classes in the Institute involve intensive discussion, requiring ready comprehension of spoken English and the ability to converse fluently. In addition, a high level of proficiency in written English is expected. The college does not offer an English as a Second Language (ESL) preparatory course. All students whose native language is not English are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Written English (TWE). A TOEFL score of 600 and TWE score of 5 are required for admission.

If the TOEFL-CBT (a computer-based test) is taken, a total score of 250 is required. TOEFL iBT (internet-based test) recommended total score: 112; individual section score of 27 in each area: Reading, Speaking, Listening, and Writing. Test scores should be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to the Graduate Admissions Office.

International students applying to the Graduate Institute, but not seeking financial aid, must submit an Affidavit of Financial Support for International Students form, providing the college with sponsor and bank certification information. Students seeking financial aid should in addition complete the International Student Financial Aid Application, which can be obtained from the Financial Aid Office. These forms should be sent to the college along with the completed application, essays, letters of reference, and college transcripts. Transcripts not written in English should be accompanied by a certified translation.

While the college values its international students, it cannot provide full tuition assistance, nor can it offer assistance in acquiring sponsors, room, board, employment, teaching assistant positions, or scholarships.
