June 13 Summer Semester Begins
June 15 Tutor Grant Franks will give a 3:15 p.m. lecture, entitled,Why Should I Read Ulysses if Its Only Going to Make My Head Hurt?
"This term I'm in three different reading groups: Hegel with Mr. Carey, Frantz Fenan with some of the undergraduates, and a Heidegger reading group with some of the other people in the dorm. This has proven as important as my in-class experience. The fact that you can come here and cultivate a community of people who are interested in putting time and work into difficult philosophical ideas and difficult philosophical texts is something you don't find anywhere else." Emmet Penney (SFGI17)
Graduate Institute alumnus Russell Max Simon (SFGI06) reflects on the value of his St. John's education in the spring 2016 issue of The College. In his article, he writes, "The confidence I gained by communing, grappling with and defending (or attacking) the great thinkers led me to launch into careers in which I had no formal training – and succeed." Graduate Institute alumnus Bingsheng Chen and faculty member David Carl discuss the importance, similarities, and crossover benefits of exercising at the Student Activity Center (SAC) and studying at St. John’s College. Many Santa Fe students, both graduate and undergraduate, frequent the SAC for a variety of exercise and physical activity groups, including archery, yoga, and the legendary Iron Bookworm Workout, led by Krishnan Venkatesh and David Carl.
Inspired by their War and Peace preceptorial class, Graduate Institute alumna Colleen Rafferty and tutor Caleb Thompson revisit Tolstoy's War and Peace. Together they demonstrate the exchange of ideas and seminar-style discussion integral to learning at St. John's. Preceptorials allow students the opportunity to closely examine one or two texts, and frequently inspire students to start independent study groups to further explore their discoveries in class.
