Dorian Long ’93: Learning to Lead
Following her 1993 graduation with a bachelor's degree in Social Work, Dorian Long enrolled in Fordham University for graduate studies. Given "advanced academic standing," she completed her M.S.W. in just one year. "Saint Joseph College prepared me well," Dorian said about this accomplishment. Today, Dorian brings her knowledge, enthusiasm and leadership skills to Connecticut's Department of Social Services. A program manager in Social Work Services, Dorian supervises five regional offices, manages the State's brain injury Medicaid program, and oversees other social work programs including domestic violence services. Dorian is a caregiver to her community, serving those in need with her expertise and compassion.
"I blossomed as a student at Saint Joseph College. The greatest thing I learned was that I could be a leader. There were so many leadership opportunities available to me - in student government, clubs, and as a Residence Assistant. I was always encouraged to share my skills and to learn from others. I never felt I had to take a back seat to anybody. I am also appreciative of the faculty and their own enthusiasm for learning. Not only was I fully prepared in the field of Social Work, but my education instilled a sense of passion and commitment for the work I do every day."
