A Balancing Act

Amanda Saccuzzo '12Like many graduate students returning to the classroom, Amanda Saccuzzo carries a full load: married with a seven-month old son, she also works full-time in the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement. Amanda initially enrolled in the College’s Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program, but recently switched her focus to Management.  Her decision to do so stemmed from her desire to push herself in a new direction.

“I’m basically a creative person — my undergraduate degree is a bachelor’s in music from the HARTT School — so I wanted to develop new skills that would round out my education,” she said. That being said, Amanda derived enormous value from her time in the MFT program: “I really value the quality of the education I received there. The professors encouraged abstract thinking, and guided us in learning how to think practically and critically. It’s been a very powerful tool.”

Heading into her first semester in the Management program, Amanda expects the same high-level experience: “From what I’ve heard, the Management classes are like the MFT classes in that the professors are committed to the development of the whole person and they encourage the students to focus on knowledge rather than grades.”

As far as balancing her busy life, Amanda said, “The schedule is perfect. My classes begin at 5:30 or 6:00 p.m., which gives me time to go home, feed the baby and spend time with my husband.” Like many professional women, Amanda is adeptly juggling the demands of her personal and professional lives. “It’s all good,” she surmised.
