A Study on College Students and Depression
Dr. Pamela Aselton was inspired to earn her doctorate in Nursing after working as a nurse practitioner in various college health centers and seeing an “increased number of stressed and depressed students.” She wanted to conduct research on depression, noting, “Medications are one option, but I was interested in researching what was causing college students to be so depressed, and whether non-medical treatments would be just as effective.”
Valuable Findings
Aselton conducted a study that explored how students perceived the experience of being medicated with antidepressants, finding that they generally disliked it, even if it was initially useful. The study provided nurses and nurse practitioners with valuable information to be used when assessing depressed college students are discussed.
Listening to Patients
She came to SJC to teach Family Nurse Practitioner students and was inspired by their commitment and passion. Aselton hopes to instill in her students “an openness to explore new ideas with patients and listen to their perspectives on their illness in determining a treatment plan.”
