"Helping students think for themselves," Dr. Kathleen Butler says, "is the essence of teaching here at Saint Joseph College." Dr. Butler encourages her students to look at topics from various angles, and cooperative learning is a consistent piece of her approach: "They can learn a great deal from each other by working interactively, as long as they are not afraid of making mistakes."

Dr. Butler spent 20 years working as an independent consultant in school systems around the world. Her love of teaching also extends to publishing and speaking, and she remembers all those individuals with whom she has connected along the way: "I was making a presentation in Massachusetts, and at the end of it a man told me that some experiences in his life had new light and meaning because of the understanding that he just came to as a result of the presentation. Those are golden moments."

Being part of Saint Joseph College, Dr. Butler adds, "is belonging to something much bigger than yourself. The College truly operates on a mission for the well- being of individuals."
