For Dr. Jerry Darling, teaching is a passion. "I can't imagine doing anything else with my life. When I am at home, I think about tomorrow's lecture." Dr. Darling's approach in the classroom is highly interactive, as he uses multiple methods to help students pose the type of analytical questions that help them better understand the world around them. Dr. Darling has won the 1994 Tsehaye Excellence in Teaching award from Dartmouth, and the 2003 Reverend John J. Stack Teaching Excellence Award from Saint Joseph College.
Dr. Darling's areas of expertise range from Astrophysics and Cosmology to the History and Philosophy of Science. His research, both at Dartmouth and Saint Joseph College, has focused on determining the ultimate fate of the universe from the luminosity function of white dwarfs. In addition to numerous published works, Dr. Darling has written several articles for The Astronomical Journal concerning the spectral identification and classification of Faint Blue Stars, his primary area of astrophysical research. Additional publications include a laboratory text to accompany an introductory Physics course in Classical Mechanics and Thermodynamics.
