Dr. Margaret Gaughan utilizes her background in education and her experience as a life coach in nutrition to enhance her work in the classroom. She says, "There are many different styles of learning, so I try to present material in a variety of ways." With patience and tolerance, she asks herself what keeps a student from being open to a particular piece of information and she works with the student until she is able to grasp it.
Dr. Gaughan first became interested in the health care field through her father, a health care administrator. When she was a graduate student at Framingham State University, she was influenced by the Framingham Heart Study, a work that brought nutrition and fitness into the forefront of proper heart care. When she came to Saint Joseph College, she worked to get the Donahue Foundation to award a grant to the College for medical research into heart-healthy eating. Currently, Dr. Gaughan is writing a manuscript for people in the nutrition and health-coaching industry. It focuses on how to direct people to improve their nutrition and create a healthy life style.
Most of all, she enjoys teaching. "Saint Joseph College is an oasis," Dr. Gaughan observes, "It's a serene environment that makes a strong contribution to the education and empowerment of women. My advice for the women that come here is to do the work, read the chapters, ask questions, and join the discussions. Students need to push themselves out of their comfort zone and take risks. They'll find that they can do things that they have only dreamed of."
