As an educator and an educator of future educators, Dr. Meg Monaghan

has a clear understand of what constitutes great teaching: “I believe that powerful teaching hinges on an understanding of several interconnected and complex components of the profession. These include:

  • knowledge of one’s students and their learning
  • insight about the foundations, aims and practices related to one’s content area
  • awareness of how social, linguistic, and cultural diversity impacts the classroom
  • and a clear conception of the community within which one lives and works.”

To Dr. Monaghan, effective teaching balances and responds to these components. It also requires passion and commitment to lifelong learning, which allows one to
“continuously improve upon their practice.”

Dr. Monaghan models these behaviors as she works to guide pre-service teachers into developing their own understandings of the profession. Saint Joseph College students benefit from the diversity of her experience; she has taught in both public and private middle and high schools, as well as in teacher education programs. “These experiences have helped me develop a broader understanding of education and furthered my enthusiasm for teacher education,” Dr. Monaghan said.
