The most important thing students must learn at Saint Joseph College, according to Dr. Maureen Travis, is that they can "reach dizzying heights if they want to." She says, "The essence of my Psychology of Women course is that I don't want them to put barriers on themselves. I would like them to choose to be a nurse because that's what they want to do, not because they are not supposed to be a doctor.  They must choose of their own volition, not because of any limitations thrust upon them by society."

Dr. Travis loves to teach, and she reassures her colleagues that she would stay at the College even if she were to win the lottery. She says, "I was fortunate to have a high school chemistry teacher, Sister Ann Roberts, who taught me to love learning. I think about her every day and try to impart the same energy to my students."

Dr. Travis' goal is for her students to see the world with fresh eyes, from a new and informed perspective.  She contends that "The best part of teaching is when women students go on to achieve things that they once thought were beyond them. It's not only heartwarming, it's crucial to the betterment of our society. One of the most important aspects of a women's college is that students see women in leadership positions. This helps them with their self-confidence and the articulation of their point of view."
