Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics in compliance with U.S. Office of Education was signed into law November 1990. The U.S. Office of Education is committed to ensuring that post-secondary institutions are in full compliance with this act, and that enforcement of the act remains a priority. This act requires institutions participating in student financial aid programs under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to disclose campus crime statistics and security information. The Act requires higher education institutions to give timely warnings of crimes that represent a threat to the safety of the campus community, and make public their campus security policies. To be in compliance each institution must meet three main obligations; policy disclosure, records collection and retention and information dissemination.
Campus Police Authority and Jurisdiction
St. John's College Public Safety officers are certified Campus Police officers and serve under Public Safety Article Title 3-Subtitle 3 Special Police Officers appointed by the Governor of the State of Maryland. Each special police officer shall protect and preserve peace and good order and arrest individuals who trespass or commit offenses and exercise the powers of a police officer on the property (St. John's College, Annapolis) described in the application for the commission.
Campus Safety and Police Policies and Procedures
Public Safety is committed to reducing crime, disorder, and the fear of crime on campus. In the form of foot patrol, officers provide security 24 hours per day throughout the year. Officers do not carry firearms. Additional patrol personnel are provided during times of increased activity on campus. All criminal reports will be investigated. The College does not have a procedure for voluntary, confidential reporting of crime statistics. Violations of the law may be referred to law enforcement agencies or to the College's Assistant Dean as appropriate. The Daily Crime Log is available during regular business hours in the Public Safety office. There are 14 Public Safety (special police) officers employed on campus. Officers carry a cellular telephone and can be contacted 24 hours a day by dialing ext. 2000.
Annual Security Report
St. John's College's Annual Security Report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning crimes that occurred on campus, in certain off campus buildings or property owned or controlled by St. John's College and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. This report is prepared to fulfill the requirements of Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended in 1998, the provision of an Annual Security Report as described under S668.46. This report is provided to all current and prospective students or anyone requesting a copy.
