Athens Victorious: Democracy in Plato's Republic

Greg Recco
Role: Author

Athens Victorious argues that Plato's Republic, far from advocating the authoritarian rule of a naturally superior elite, deliberately demonstrates the superiority of the democratic constitution. It does this in two related ways: by revealing the fatal deficiencies of all forms of government that do not properly value freedom, and by indicating the profound connections between freedom, properly understood, and the practice of philosophy.
