In the Orthodox Christian tradition, great emphasis is placed on the idea of Personhood, on Meeting. Crashing against God, embracing Nature, suffering hatred, being stunned by love or indifference – these encounters are frightening. But they are personal. If we are merely studying from a safe distance, if we habitually move faster than the pace of our hearts, if we prefer entertainment to engagement, then we will never be persons and we will never be poets.
