Course Description and Objectives.

This represents an introduction to the study of ecology and natural history of the Farmington River watershed. The course is divided into three components: distance-learning study (Bio 160), literature review (Bio 160D), and field research (Bio 160L). Students may take combination 160/160D for a total of 3 credits or 160/160L for a total of 4 credits. Bio 160 must be taken concurrently with Bio 160L or 160D.

The distance-learning component (Biol 160) focus on the hydrology, aquatic ecology, and habitat use of moving waters, with a focus on the Farmington River. This part of the course fulfills the Science and Technology component of the Core Curriculum of Saint Joseph College.

The literature review component (Biol 160D) involves a term paper dealing with issues raised during the lecture, compiled into a substantive review of literature on that topic.

The field component (Biol 160L) includes site visits to Hogsback Dam, People’s State Forest, Satan’s Kingdom, the Pequabuck inflow, the Simsbury glide, Tariffville Gorge, Rainbow Reservoir, Windsor, and the Connecticut River junction. The field trips may not be taken without taking the lecture component. The field trips fulfill the lab science component of the Saint Joseph College general curriculum. Lab fee: $50.

Prerequisites: an appreciation of flowing waters.
