Humanities Division
The Humanities Division at Saint Joseph College is comprised of the departments of fine arts, foreign languages, English, philosophy and religious studies. The division offers majors in art history, French, Spanish, English (with the opportunity for a writing concentration within this major), philosophy, and religious studies. Interdisciplinary majors in American Studies and humanities are also available. The mission of the Humanities Division is to facilitate the development of the ethical, artistic, spiritual, and rational potential of each human being through exposure to various forms of creative expression, cultures, historical periods, philosophical systems and religious, literary and artistic traditions. The humanities establish a foundation for lifelong intellectual exploration and growth. A Greek philosopher described a "fabled land so cold that words spoken in winter could not be heard until spring. So also a person who reads Plato's words in youth may not understand them until they are softened in maturity." Within a model of lifelong development, the Humanities Division is committed to developing creative and reflective individuals with an extensive knowledge and a theoretical understanding of their chosen subject area.
