"The human development model of study of gerontology drives the Saint Joseph College graduate gerontology curriculum and is unique in the field. Having this background enables graduates of the program to see older adults from a holistic perspective and consider their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs in context of the aging process. Saint Joseph College has made me a better program director."
- Robin H. Abourizk, 1997

Since 1981, the Institute in Gerontology has prepared men and women for leadership in the field of aging. The philosophy of the Institute is based on the belief that human development is a lifelong process. Each age is of value as each age has certain tasks, and accomplishments.

The course work and field work in the undergraduate and graduate programs reflect this view. While many of the courses deal with specific issues and problems associated with aging, all of the courses reflect the philosophy of lifelong developmental growth and emphasize the strengths of human beings at every age.
