CREC Institute for Contemporary Global Issues

This course is restricted to students enrolled in the four-week summer residential experience offered by the CREC Institute for Contemporary Global Issues. Students will be introduced to the current leading global economic, political, socio-cultural, and environmental issues. Students will explore the role of international organizations, be exposed to the leading debates on political, cultural and societal issues, and gain knowledge about environmental sustainability. Field trips will enhance the material discussed in the classroom. Co-curricular enrichment experiences such as food and music will be provided on the campus.

Shyamala Raman
Professor Shyamala Raman
Academic Director
Shyamala Raman is Professor of Economics and International Studies at Saint Joseph College. She has a doctorate in Economics and an MBA in Finance from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University and a Master's degree in Economics from the University of Madras. She joined the faculty in 1983. Since 1994, she has directed the International Studies program. She has taught a wide variety of courses in economics, international studies and finance. She has been awarded several grants for curriculum development and technology. She is the recipient of the 2001 Father John J. Stack Award for Teaching Excellence. She is strongly committed to demystifying, deconstructing and democratizing the discourse of economics and global issues. She traveled to the Middle East in 2006 as part of a team that received a U.S. government partnership grant for teacher education. In spring 2007, she was honored by two community organizations for her work on advocacy relating to women’s issues. She has led the CREC Institute for Contemporary Global Issues since 2002.
  
Robert Cotto
Robert Cotto
Lead Teacher
Robert Cotto is a social studies teacher at the Metropolitan Learning Center for Global and International Studies (MLC). He teaches courses in Global and International Studies and Sociology. He has worked in both public and private schools in New York, New York; San Francisco, California; and Cambridge, Massachusetts. Born and raised in Connecticut, Mr. Cotto earned his B.A. in sociology at Dartmouth College and his Ed.M. at Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Robert is recently working on a second master's degree in American studies at Trinity College. Robert recently had a chapter entitled "A Coqui's Call" included in the book Mi Voz, Mi Vida: Latino College Students Tell Their Life Stories, which was published by the Cornell University Press. He has been the lead teacher of the CREC Institute for Contemporary Global Issues since 2005. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, photography, and sports.
  
Mary Helen Pombo
Mary Helen Pombo '08
Teaching Assistant Institute for Contemporary Global Issues
Mary Helen Pombo graduated from Saint Joseph College in May 2008 with two majors and a minor in Spanish. Her first major was in International Studies (with a concentration in economy, polity and society, with special reference to European Studies). Her second major was in French which she self-designed. At the 2008 Awards Ceremony, she was presented with two book awards for excellence in International Studies and in French. In early May 2008, she was also selected by the Symposium Day Committee to present her International Studies senior paper at the 2008 Saint Joseph College Founders' Circle Event. Her passion for languages has led her to pursue greater fluency in Portuguese, Spanish, French, English and Arabic. After studying abroad in Europe, Mary Helen believes that in today's world, better global understandings are fostered by diverse means of communication. Mary Helen will be serving as a teaching assistant for the second time at the CREC Summer Institute for Contemporary Global Issues.

Administrative Assistant Institutes for American Politics and Contemporary Global Issues

Kathy Ly, a student in the Honors program at Saint Joseph College, is entering her sophomore year this upcoming fall and is planning on majoring in International Studies. She has a very strong interest in culture, languages, and globalization with a special interest in Japan.
