Master of Science in Nutrition Online

Continue your professional education at your convenience without sacrificing quality. Enroll in the online master of science degree program in Nutrition at Saint Joseph College.

The online format will provide you with the flexibility and convenience for continued education so that you can work while earning this degree. You will have class discussions with colleagues from all over the world. And you'll learn from the same professors available to you in our on-ground programs.

As the Nutrition profession continues to evolve, the master's degree is increasingly becoming the first professional credential expected in the field.

The 30-credit curriculum includes the study of health promotion, nutrition through life's stages and the latest research on nutrition-related diseases. You will design an individual plan of study with the help of your advisor.

If you have completed an internship at Saint Joseph College, nine credits can be applied to the master's degree. If you completed an internship at another site, six credits may be transferred to Saint Joseph College. To receive credit you must submit your verification certificate from your Dietetic Internship Program.

Admission Requirements

  • An admission application, available at www.sjc.edu/applyonline
  • $50 application fee
  • Sealed transcript of your bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Two letters recommending you for graduate work from professors or professional colleagues who can attest to your ability to be a successful graduate student.
  • An 'interview', by email or by phone with Program Director, Margery Lawrence, Ph.D., R.D. (mlawrence@sjc.edu) to discuss your interest in the program and to work on a planned program of study

A planned program must be completed after matriculation.

    • For on-ground students: Record of immunization for Measles, Mumps, and Rubella, submitted to the Health Services office at Saint Joseph College, for students born after 12/31/56. Requirement is waived for all online students and for students born on or before that date.
    • No GRE or other exam required

Will this degree allow me to take the Registration Exam?

No, this degree will not lead to ADA verification.

How long with it take me?

Typically, students take one or two courses per semester. Courses are 3 credits so one needs 10 courses. You decide how many you wish to take each year. Usually the college allows 6 years from the date of matriculation. See the graduate catalog for more details.

May I take courses before matriculation?

Yes, a student can take up to 6 credits before one must apply for matriculation.

Are all the courses online?

Yes, one can earn all their credits online.

How much does it cost?

The tuition cost is determined each year in the Spring.

Does one need to have a bachelor's in nutrition to apply for the masters?

No, but one needs to take a basic nutrition course, undergraduate biochemistry and physiology (graduate science courses would also qualify but undergraduate will work too).

NUTR 380 Nutrition for Nursing Practice: is a course that combines basic nutrition with basic medical nutrition therapy. This course is offered online one or more times per year. This would satisfy the requirement for the basic course.
Biochemistry would be a prerequisite.

What can I do with a Masters in nutrition?

If one is an RD than the Masters enhances your knowledge base and makes you more attractive to employers.

If one is new to the field it may be more challenging to find a specific position. Potential areas of employment are state and city health departments, community nutrition, media, private businesses, industry.
