Thomas McBee, Coordinator
The College Events Office promotes non-academic opportunities for students to socialize and relax from the rigors of the Great Books Program. The College Events Office maintains and operates all of the college’s audio/visual materials. We are always open to new suggestions and welcome input from students.
The office is located in the basement of Peterson Student Center. If you have any questions about the following activities, please call ext. 6139 for more details.
The College Events Office hosts numerous bands, performers, and classical music concerts ever year. Concerts are usually on Friday nights in place of lecture, but occasionally are scheduled at other times. Recent concerts include the Miro quartet, the Baltimore Consort, the Axelrod quartet, and Lionheart. From time to time, the College Events Office secures and distributes tickets to events by Santa Fe Pro Musica and other local artists. The concerts usually take place at the Lensic Performing Arts Center. Look for upcoming concerts and events in the Ephemera or on fliers posted on the Student Activities bulletin board in Peterson Student Center.
The College Events Office throws several parties each year.
Open mic nights are held occasionally in the coffee shop. Students are encouraged to show off their talents in poetry, music, comedy, etc.
The Film Society of St. John's College is a student-run group that is assisted by the College Events Office. Admission and popcorn are free! Most films are shown on Saturday nights. Contact Thomas McBee at ext. 6139 for more information.
The senior class, with help from the College Events Office, sponsors a social hour for upperclassman and faculty called Nabla. This event gives juniors and seniors a chance to interact with their tutors in a non-academic setting. Dates are announced throughout the academic year.
The College Events Office hosts Study Breaks in the Great Hall throughout the semester, which often consist of several hours of cartoons. Refreshments are served. Check the Student Activities bulletin board in Peterson (across from the coffee shop) for the dates of Nabla and Study Breaks.
"It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one's self through the eyes of others, of measuring one's soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity."
- W.E.B. Du Bois
