Autism Summer Institute at Saint Joseph College
August 9 - 12, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

From August 9 - 12, Saint Joseph College will offer its 2nd Annual Autism Summer Institute. This four-day program is designed to provide parents, educators and professionals with basic to advanced knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders information regarding interventions that address the needs of individuals with autism throughout the lifespan. It will provide caregivers, community service personnel, related services personnel and educators with an understanding of the needs of individuals with autism and will improve dialogue between practitioners and parents.

FEATURED SPEAKERS AT THE AUTISM SUMMER INSTITUTE:

Michael D. Powers, Psy.D. is a pediatric psychologist and the Director of The Center for Children with Special Needs in Glastonbury, CT. He specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities. Dr. Powers holds an appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychology at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University. He is the author of Asperger Syndrome and Your Child (HarperCollins, 2002) and editor of the award-winning book Children with Autism: A Parents’ Guide (Woodbine House, second edition, 2000). Dr. Powers is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on autism, and has presented extensively throughout the United States and abroad. He is a member of the Professional Advisory Board of the Asperger Syndrome Coalition of the United States and former member of the Board of Directors of the Autism Society of America.

Rhea Paul, Ph.D., CCC-SLP is Professor Emerita at Southern Connecticut State University, and Professor and Director of the Communication Disorders Section of the Developmental Disabilities program at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale University. She is author of over 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, 30 book chapters, and seven books. She has been Principal Investigator on research projects on language disorders and autism funded by the National Institutes of Health as well as private foundations. Dr. Paul has participated in a variety of expert panels and boards, has served as Vice President of both the Oregon and Connecticut State Speech-Language-Hearing Associations, and is President-Elect of the Connecticut Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her latest book, co-authored with Peter Flipsen Jr., Ph.D., is titled Speech Sound Disorders in Children (Plural Publishing, Inc., Nov. 2009).

Kristen Powers, M.S., OTR/L has been practicing as an occupational therapist for over 15 years. She has lectured on sensory-motor issues and children with Autism Spectrum Disorders both in the United States and abroad. Ms. Powers is the Coordinator of Rehabilitative Services at The Center for Children with Special Needs in Glastonbury, CT and conducts evaluations, school-based consultations and therapeutic interventions. She is also director of the feeding clinic to address oral-motor deficits and food selectivity in children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

John D. Molteni, Ph.D., BCBA-D received his doctorate in Clinical Child Psychology from St. John’s University. He is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Autism Spectrum Disorder Initiative at Saint Joseph College. He directs the Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorders and recently developed the Graduate Course sequence in Applied Behavior Analysis. Dr. Molteni is a licensed psychologist and a doctoral level Board Certified Behavior Analyst who has developed instructional and behavioral programs for children, adolescents and young adults with autism and related disabilities. Dr. Molteni’s clinical and consulting work has included involvement with public and nonpublic schools, residential treatment facilities, inpatient psychiatric units, government agencies and outpatient clinics. Dr. Molteni currently serves as the President of the Connecticut Association for Behavior Analysis, a position he has held for three years.
