The Annual Foreign Language Film Series at Saint Joseph College - Great Love Novels in Film
The Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities, in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Languages at Saint Joseph College, will present a film series entitled, Grandes Novelas de Amor en el Cine (Great Love Novels in Film). Prior to the screenings, which are all part of the fall 2009 Bruyette Athenaeum Performing Arts Series, each film will be introduced by a member of the Saint Joseph College faculty or an educator from a regional university. September 17, Annual Foreign Language Film Series - Grandes Novelas de Amor en el Cine (Great Love Novels in Film): The Sea Inside by Alejandro Amenábar (Spain/France/Italy, 2004): Based on the profoundly moving true story that captured the world’s attention, The Sea Inside features Academy Award-nominee Javier Bardem who delivers a powerful and sensitive portrayal of Ramón Sampedro, a quadriplegic who fought a 30-year campaign to win the right to end his life with dignity. The Sea Inside is the story of Ramón’s relationships with two women: Julia (Belén Rueda) a lawyer who supports his cause, and Rosa (Lola Dueñas), a local woman who wants to convince him that life is worth living. Through the gift of his love, these two women are inspired to accomplish things they never previously thought possible. Despite his wish to die, Ramón taught everyone he encountered the meaning, value and preciousness of life. Produced in Spanish with English subtitles, the film will be introduced by Agnes Curry, Ph.D., associate professor of Philosophy at Saint Joseph College and Diana Valencia, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish at Saint Joseph College. October 1, Annual Foreign Language Film Series - Grandes Novelas de Amor en el Cine (Great Love Novels in Film): Love in the Time of Cholera by Mike Newell (USA, 2007): Based on Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel and adapted by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Ronald Harwood (The Pianist), Love in the Time of Cholera is one of the world’s most romantic stories. The drama traces the Job-like vigil of Florentino Ariza, who waits for more than half a century to claim the hand of Fermina Daza, the woman he loves. Featuring a talented cast that includes Javier Bardem, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Benjamin Bratt, John Leguizamo, Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Hector Elizondo and Liev Schreiber. Produced in English, the film will be introduced by Roger A. Zapata, Ph.D., associate professor of Spanish at Montclair State University. November 3, Annual Foreign Language Film Series - Grandes Novelas de Amor en el Cine (Great Love Novels in Film): The Horseman on the Roof by Jean-Paul Rappeneau (France, 1995): The time is 1832 and a cholera epidemic is sweeping Provence. Angelo, a handsome officer gallops untiringly through the dying towns and villages. He takes the time to help until his own strength gives out. Inscrutable and calm, Angelo also takes the time to silently love Pauline de Theus, an enigmatic young woman who joins him in his trek while she searches for her missing husband. Together they face an unrelenting epidemic that, like war, reveals both the misery and the greatness of mankind: fear, panic, denunciation, treason, hatred, anger, devotion, courage and self-sacrifice.
