“Passion lends them power …” The American Shakespeare Center’s touring company returns to Saint Joseph College this fall with the Blackfriars Stage Company’s production of Romeo and Juliet. With its ravishing language and uproarious comedy, Romeo and Juliet celebrates love’s triumph and its trivialities. Verona’s walls embrace the volatility of youth as well as the wisdom and restraint that often escape young and old alike. Dance, athleticism, and swordplay share the stage with sonnets, bawdy wit, and soul-searching speeches in this profoundly human and always surprising masterpiece. Join us as the American Shakespeare Center’s touring ensemble reproduces the traditional Elizabethan staging of the Bard’s classic tragedy.

Blackfriars Stage Company is the international touring arm of the American Shakespeare Center, located in Staunton, VA. Each Blackfriars’ performance begins with pre-show entertainment (song and jest), providing the audience with some of the typical pleasures of the Elizabethan era. Additionally, the acting ensemble performs on a simple stage surrounded by the audience. Re-creating the conditions of performance, Blackfriars Stage Company explores its repertory of plays for a better understanding of these great works, and of the human theatre experience past, present and future.
