Overview

The Center is a unique, special education program for elementary, middle and high school students with intellectual, developmental, learning disabilities, and related behavioral challenges. The school, a state approved, private special education facility, provides highly structured, intensive, self-contained special education programs. It serves 120 students with a staff to student ratio of less than 1:2. Close collaboration between family, school districts, and other service providers is an important component of the Gengras program. In addition to providing a lively learning environment for school-aged students, we also provide a lab school for the college students of Saint Joseph College . We offer undergraduate and graduate students opportunities for observations, practicum experiences, field studies, and student teaching. The Gengras Center gives the college students a variety of opportunities to learn from our highly educated teaching staff as well as through working directly with students.

Staff includes: Special Educators, Vocational Teachers and Job Coaches, Social Workers, Speech and Language, Physical and Occupational Therapists, a Psychologist, Art, Music, and Physical and Adventure Education teachers, a full time registered nurse and other professionals as needed.

Referrals to The Gengras Center must be made by the local school district through the Planning and Placement Team process. Students from over 50 Connecticut and southern Massachusetts towns attend our school. Local school districts provide transportation to the Gengras Center.
