A New Academic Year Begins!
As the official opening of the academic year, SJC’s annual Convocation ceremony took place on Monday, August 30 in The Connor Chapel of Our Lady. Convocation brings students, faculty, administrators and staff together in a ceremony that blends the religious and spiritual with the academic. Following a prayer of Invocation offered by Director of Campus Ministry Kathleen Dorney, CND, President Pamela Trotman Reid, Ph.D. welcomed all attendees. Interim Provost Anne Lippert, Ph.D. spoke on “Convocation and Commitment.” As recipient of the 2010 Reverend John J. Stack Teaching Excellence Award, Tonya Rondinone, M.A., lecturer in the department of Psychology, delivered the Convocation Address: “Titles, Labels, and Passion: What Really Counts?” An excerpt from Ms. Rondinone’s address appears below:
“ … Many of you have a mental road map of where you will be in four years. I strongly advise you to use that map as a starting point in your journey with the allowance for some side trips and detours along the way. Some of you will depart SJC having followed the exact path you plotted. However most of you will find that you need to readjust your route to facilitate a new or unexpected journey. Do not be afraid of adjusting your life map. Do not be afraid to venture on the road less traveled. In doing so, you will find your passion along the way.”
