Saint Joseph College to Locate New School of Pharmacy in Downtown Hartford

Saint Joseph College today announced that its new School of Pharmacy will be located at Hartford 21 on Trumbull Street in downtown Hartford.

"This is a historic day for Saint Joseph College as we build upon our well-regarded health sciences curricula with our first doctoral program – one that will bring talented young professionals to the Hartford community," said Saint Joseph College President Pamela Trotman Reid, Ph.D. "The School of Pharmacy at Hartford 21 continues Saint Joseph College’s tradition of providing students with a rigorous education while responding to the needs of our community. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this day possible."

Today’s announcement marks the first time the College has housed one of its schools outside of its West Hartford campus. The School of Pharmacy, which is expected to enroll a first-year class of 65 students in the Fall of 2010, further exemplifies the College’s commitment to the Greater Hartford community.

"Northland is thrilled to welcome the St. Joseph College School of Pharmacy downtown and appreciate their commitment and strategic involvement to Hartford’s ongoing revitalization," stated Lawrence R. Gottesdiener, Chairman of Northland Investment Corporation.

"The Saint Joseph College School of Pharmacy will prepare accomplished pharmacists. It will be a school devoted to service, scholarly work and best professional practices," said Dr. Joseph R. Ofosu, Saint Joseph College Dean of Pharmacy.

The Saint Joseph College School of Pharmacy will offer a unique three-year, co-educational doctoral degree program in Pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Like other professional degree programs (e.g. law or medicine), students can enroll upon completion of a bachelor’s degree, subject to required courses. The College’s full-time undergraduate program now offers a pre-pharmacy option where all the prerequisite courses can be completed.

In addition, the School will collaborate with pharmaceutical companies and government organizations in activities to serve the area’s health needs.

"The School of Pharmacy reflects Saint Joseph College’s strategic plan to address the need for pharmacists in the U.S. and in the region," said Jeanne B. Merola, chair of the College’s Board of Trustees. "Our pharmacy program, like the College, is committed to excellence and diversity."

"Connecticut and the City of Hartford are home to leading companies and institutions in the health care industry. Saint Joseph College, with its programs in health professions, nursing, and now with their School of Pharmacy, will continue to prepare our workforce of the future to confront the nation and the state’s growing health care needs," said U.S. Congressman John B. Larson.

The School will occupy over 35,000 square feet on the third floor of 229 Trumbull Street.
