On Friday evening the college will host a launch party for its new digital magazine, Rational Animal, at Junction Bar & Grill in the Railyard. Created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Santa Fe Campus, the magazine features original writing, ideas and humor as well as interesting, quirky and insightful stories about alumni, students, tutors, staff and friends of St. John’s College. The magazine is available for free download at the iTunes App Store and Google Play. The theme of Rational Animal’s inaugural issue is Food + Wine and the launch party will feature food, cocktails and giveaways. The Santa Fe community is encouraged to attend. On Saturday at 3:00 p.m., St. John’s College alum Lael Gold, Ph.D., will present a lecture on dreams entitled, “All that Matter of the Living Air: Dreams and the Western Tradition”. Gold, who is also a stand-up comedian and a literature scholar, provides dream-based counsel to clients worldwide. Her lecture will consider the relationship among prophetic, philosophical and scientific modes of knowing and the potential role of dreams in personal and civic life. She will share some little known but well documented stories of dreams in history and provide a few simple, powerful tools for making good use of our dreams. On Sunday afternoon, the College will host a chile-themed chocolate making class led by famed chocolatier and St. John’s College alum Lauren Gockley. Named one of Dessert Professional’s “Top Ten Chocolatiers in North America,” Gockley was trained at the prestigious L’Ecole du Grand Chocolat and is the owner of Coda Chocolate, known for its incomparable flavors, limited edition chocolates and customized creations for a variety of clients. The chile-themed class will discuss chocolate from a historical perspective and participants will have the opportunity to create authentic hot-cocoa, moldable milk chocolate and chocolate truffles flavored with New Mexico chiles, while learning techniques and recipes that can be used at home. Chocolate Class—Sunday, September 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., St. John’s College Dining Hall. Please note that space in the chocolate class is extremely limited, please register if you would like to participate; additional seating will be available to observe. Lauren Gockley’s specialty collection chocolates, created especially for St. John’s 50th anniversary, will be available for sale following the class.
