Introduction:
  1. Probability: Intuitive concepts versus mathematical definitions
  2. How can one measure statistical chance or risk?
Points for discussion:
  1. Probability:
    1. What is the meaning of the word 'probability'? Look up the work 'probability' using a standard dictionary and an on-line dictionary. What are some common synonyms for 'probability'? Do you see why a mathematical definition is necessary?
    2. Read pp 1-7, from text.
  2. Measuring risks associated with meteors:
    1. How can we measure the risks associated with meteors?
    2. Listen to the streaming Internet lecture, The Risk to Civilization from Extraterrestial Objects lecture and make a list of variables that could be used to measure the risks.
    3. According to a 29 August 2002, NPR Morning Edition Meteor Girl report, Siobhan Cowton, a 14-year-old resident of Northallerton, England, claims to have been struck by a meteor. Scientists are still studying the rock to verify whether it is of galactic origin.
    4. Use the SJC library and the Internet to research news articles about two Wethersfield, CT homes that were struck by meteors, one in 1971 and another in 1982.
