Director's Welcome
Welcome to the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery. Although there has been a significant art collection at the College since 1937 (a mere five years after the College was founded), the Art Gallery itself is considerably more recent. Opened in 2001 in the new Carol Autorino Center for the Arts and Humanities, it now houses a collection of over 2000 works of art. A paintings collection that is focused on American art of the twentieth century, including works by Thomas Hart Benton, Georgia O’Keefe, and Milton Avery, is complemented by a collection of works of art on paper that ranges from sixteenth century European prints to nineteenth century Japanese woodblock prints and contemporary American works. With six exhibition galleries, a print study room, and up-to-date art storage facilities, the Saint Joseph College Art Gallery has made the College’s collection more accessible and has opened myriad opportunities for the study and enjoyment of art. Each year we present special exhibitions in addition to changing installations of the permanent collection and offer a variety of educational programs for the College community and the general public. I hope this online information about the Saint Joseph Art Gallery will encourage you to visit us and experience first-hand the transformational power of great art.
