Campus Safety, Who We Are and What We Do
The Saint Joseph College Department of Campus Safety is a private security force trained to respond to emergency situations on campus. Officers do not carry weapons and do not make arrests, but have been trained to recognize when involvement of local authorities is necessary and to take action in the appropriate manner. Officers patrol the campus on a regular basis. Contact with an officer is best achieved by calling 860.231.5222 or 5222 from a campus phone. This number connects the caller to a portable radio the officer carries at all times while on duty. The Department of Campus Safety operates 24-hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year fulfilling our responsibilities and providing services as indicated below:

- Photo ID's and badges
- Victim assistance
- Crime reporting
- Local authorities assistance (police, fire and ambulance service)
- Safety seminars to all incoming first year students
- Campus events assistance
- Shuttle services
- Consortium transports
- Safety post at the O'Connell Athletic Center and Bruyette Athenaeum events
- Material Safety and Data Sheet Records
Responsibilities
- Patrol/response on campus
- Secure campus buildings
- Maintain campus lighting
- Investigate criminal activity
- Incident reporting and tracking
- Maintain fire equipment, alarms, sprinklers, blue lights
- Perform campus escorts
- Parking/traffic enforcement and registration
- Campus events and special duty
- Safety hazard inspections and mitigation
- The Director chairs the safety committee
- Collaborates closely with insurance representatives to create a safe campus environment
- Fleet management, training, records check
- Fingerprinting/background checks for School for Young Children and The Gengras Center
- Coordination and participation in drills and exercises
- Cleary Act Uniform Crime Code reporting
- Hazardous materials and non-hazardous waste disposal and record keeping
- 24-hour right to know access to Material Safety Data Sheets
Meet the Members of the Department of Campus Safety
Officers may be recognized by their uniform consisting of black slacks, gray shirts, and a Saint Joseph College Public Safety shoulder patch depicting the College crest. The public safety officers patrol the campus in a marked vehicle. Officers in the department undergo a thorough background investigation prior to their employment with the College and complete a training program with a training officer when hired. Our officers come from a variety of security employment backgrounds and experience which diversifies who we are and what we do for the Saint Joseph College community.
