History of Modern Art
Most students do not have a chance to take art history classes until college, but want to learn more about the art that takes shape from society and inspires so many movements and styles.
In our history of modern art course, students receive a sound introduction to movements that defined modern art. Our survey begins in the 1860s with Impressionism – a reaction against traditional styles that held sway for hundreds of years. Then we turn to Fauvism and Expressionism at the turn of the century. Our survey continues into the first half of the 20th century through Art Nouveau, Art Deco and into Cubism and Surrealism. Then, the mid-century brings Abstract Art, Pop Art and Op Art. We conclude with some examples of current work.
Through our survey, we look at key artists and artwork. We ask why the pieces are significant, what the artists were reacting to, and how their work impacted art and social circles. Students participate actively in discussing the trends.
We visit a number of local galleries and museums to view artwork and understand its place in the larger context of art history.
