Santa Fe Commencement 2021

Dear Graduating Students and Your Families:

First things first: congratulations! You are nearing the end of a long journey through the St. John’s Program, as well as a historic pandemic. Making it this far, especially through the last year, with your hearts and minds intact, and your degree just weeks away, is an achievement that perhaps no other class of Johnnies can lay claim to. I urge you to enjoy these last weeks of your time with St. John’s.

With Commencement up ahead, on Saturday, May 22, questions are beginning to arise about what our event will look like. Many of you are here in Santa Fe and want an in-person ceremony. Some of you are spread across the country and world with no easy way to return, and therefore prefer an online ceremony. In a related conundrum, we remain under fairly strict state regulations that limit gathering sizes to 20. While we live in a state that is leading the nation on the vaccination front, we also live in a state with some of the country’s strictest public health regulations.

To maximize inclusivity, we will have a blended event and also invite you to collaborate with us on finalizing some details. First, we will have a virtual commencement ceremony that everyone can virtually attend. Immediately following this, we will host an in-person “after-event” for graduating students, tutors and staff. Due to possible state gathering limitations, we will need to be creative and will be reaching out for your input on what this gathering will look like soon—as planning must begin now.

For now, we are asking that visiting families plan private gatherings off campus, which will help us deliver an in-person celebration that also meets likely capacity limitations. It is possible that we could make a last-minute call and host a family barbecue on our grassy field, but this decision would be made a week or two in advance of commencement, based on state regulations, and, we realize, would not give families time to plan travel.

I’ve recorded a short video message to share more with you about the virtual ceremony, the live after-event, our recently secured commencement speaker, and a second gathering for your class and the Class of 2020.

We look forward to having you join us first at the livestreamed celebration to honor the accomplishments and victories of the Class of 2021—and afterwards at our in-person student, tutor and staff gathering. Please mark your calendars.
