Voices That Endured: The Great Books and the Active Life

Stringfellow Barr
Role: Author
This book inspired the Great Books Program at St. John’s.

Voices That Endured was originally written in 1948. It is based on the List of Great Books as taught at St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, where Stringfellow Bar was President. The chapters include “Great Books and the Active Life,” “The Dialectical Republic,” “The City of God,” “The City of Man,” “The Great Mercantile Republic,” and “The City of Torment.” Barr professes that the writings of the greatest minds not only provide insights into the past, but also guide contemporary readers through the meaning of life, what aims are worth choosing, and how men can achieve those aims.
