Interlibrary Loan
Mission
The Interlibrary Loan department supports the research of students, faculty and staff through acquiring material not within the college library collections. The service provides article delivery and short term loans from other libraries.
How
Before submitting a book request check CONNECT, the library online catalog to see if the title you need is in our collection.
Electronic forms for book or article requests are available through the "MySJC" portal on the library tab. Paper forms are available at The Pope Pius XII Library. Please include all the information about the materials you require and how you would like to be contacted when your materials arrive. Plan ahead as the response time from thousands of libraries cannot be predicted.
Fees
Whenever possible, interlibrary loans are a FREE service; the library is a member of OCLC and Libraries Very Interested in Sharing (LVIS) which enables us to borrow on a reciprocal basis across the country. Only costs charged by lending libraries are passed on to you. This would be a rare occurrence.
Loan Periods
Any articles you request are yours to keep. Books are generally loaned for three weeks. It is important to understand that interlibrary loan is not in any way meant to eliminate the purchasing of textbooks or to by-pass the library's reserve book system. Loans of ILL materials are NOT for the entire semester.
Fines
The due date is clearly written in each book you request. Failure to return your interlibrary loan promptly results in a $1.00 per day fine. Overdue books can jeopardize Saint Joseph College's borrowing privileges with lending libraries so please return your materials by the assigned due date.
Renewals
Each lending library sets the due date according to their loan policies -- usually three weeks. Renewals are generally granted for two weeks. However, no lending library will renew a book that is overdue.
Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under certain conditions specific in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "Fair Use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of the copyright law.
