An Interdisciplinary Curriculum
Our program goes beyond the study of a language and incorporates the study of a culture. Whether you select Spanish, French or both, you will learn to speak, read, and write with conversational ease. Our curriculum recommends related courses in International Studies, Art History, Business, Political Science and Literature. For Spanish majors, the curriculum includes Advanced Conversation, Advanced Grammar and Composition, and a variety of courses dealing with the literature and civilization of Spain and Latin America, like The Golden Age of Spanish Literature and Spanish Civilization.
Saint Joseph College has a traditional minor in Spanish Language, and also offers a minor and certificate program in Latino Community Practice, a professional credential for students who wish to gain social science research skills and Spanish language fluency in order to work with the Latino population. French minors study French Literature, Exploring the Fancophone World, Women in French Literature, Conversation, Culture, and Composition, and more.
Study Abroad
Foreign language majors spend a semester or year abroad as part of a cultural internship. This invaluable experience offers the opportunity to live and study in France, Spain, Mexico, Canada or Puerto Rico. Students of the foreign language program benefit from the College's esteemed International Studies program.
Professional Opportunity
With either a major degree in Spanish or a minor in French, you are provided the opportunity to work in the fields of education, government, business and human services. Graduates of the Saint Joseph College language program have secured employment as teachers, translators and representatives at Epcot Center, the International Development Bank and public and private schools throughout the region.
