Maria Summa, Pharm.D., R.Ph., BCPS

Dr. Summa received her Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from the University of Connecticut and her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from West Virginia University. Dr. Summa completed a Pharmacy Practice Residency at New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Summa comes to Saint Joseph College from Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, a 617-bed acute care hospital in Hartford, Connecticut where she was most recently the Director of Pharmacy. In this role, Dr. Summa was responsible for the planning, organization, and direction of the system’s multi-campus inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services and accredited pharmacy residency program, and led a talented team of nearly one hundred professional and technical individuals. Dr. Summa also served as the Assistant Director for Clinical Pharmacy Programs and Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacist for Saint Francis. Dr. Summa established the Medication Management Service, a referral-based pharmacotherapy clinic within an adult internal medicine clinic, and provided medication therapy management for patients with a variety of chronic diseases.
Dr. Summa has held academic appointments as Assistant Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at the University of Connecticut, School of Pharmacy. Dr. Summa has served as a Coordinator of Drug Information Services and Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator for the Veterans Administration Connecticut Healthcare System.
Dr. Summa has authored several peer-reviewed articles in a range of research areas, including the intersection of clinical nutrition and pharmacotherapy, AIDS therapy, and health systems management, among others.
Dr. Summa maintains active memberships in the American Society of Health Systems Pharmacists and the Connecticut Pharmacists Association. She is a certified pharmacist immunizer, has been Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy since 1999, and was named as the Connecticut Pharmacists Association Daniel C. Leone Pharmacist of the Year for 2009. Dr. Summa’s current practice interests include integration of pharmacists’ services in the patient-centered primary care medical home.
