Meet Our Faculty and Staff
Mark Sweezy, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences
Saint Joseph College School of Pharmacy
Dr. Mark A. Sweezy earned his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Western State College of Colorado and his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Molecular Genetics from the University of Vermont. He completed an NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Colorado in the laboratory of Dr. Richard McIntosh. Following this, he served on the faculty at the University of New England in the Department of Chemistry and Physics before coming to Saint Joseph College.
Dr. Sweezy’s research has been directed toward understanding the relationship between genome instability and carcinogenesis. His current efforts are aimed at understanding the biochemical mechanism of the repair of double-strand breaks in DNA via homologous recombination. More specifically, his efforts are focused on the elucidation of structural and thermodynamic properties of key nucleoprotein complexes within the recombination machinery. Dr. Sweezy has published original work on DNA repair processes and chromosome segregation. His work has been funded by both the NSF and the NIH.
Dr. Sweezy has been commended for his outstanding teaching and service, including Teacher of the Year and Advisor of the Year. Dr. Sweezy has served on a variety of committees dedicated to improving curriculum and implementing active learning methodologies in the classroom. He also has a keen interest in service learning and at his previous institution has used his role as faculty advisor to the Chemistry Club and the Cycling Club to implement community outreach programs with these student groups.
