Dr. Judith Durham specializes in multi-cultural counseling, a discipline that examines the contextual issues that inform someone's life, values, attitudes, assumptions, and beliefs. In short, it's a counseling methodology that looks at people in the context of their lives. Dr. Durham observes: "Most of counseling was born out of the white-male Euro-American tradition. This often does not work with women or people from other cultural groups or different ethnic backgrounds. The contextual issues necessitate change in how one provides counseling." Dr. Durham's involvement in the Guyana Immersion Experience, a College-sponsored program that takes students for a two week period of time to Guyana, South America, offers a transformative experience for students and an opportunity to really adapt their counseling skills to another culture.
A psychotherapist for more than 25 years, Dr. Durham brings a wealth of real-world experience to the classroom, as she has worked with a variety of individuals including trauma survivors. Dr. Durham contends that enhancing personal awareness is critical to the development of an empathic counselor. This process "helps a student learn about herself from the inside out." Students are forced to ask: "What does this mean about me, and who I am as a person?"
Working, teaching and being part of the Saint Joseph College community has been important to Dr. Durham, as the institution embraces the values that she treasures most: service and social justice.
