Off-Campus Master's Degree Program
Complete all steps below to apply for financial aid.
Please note: There are financial aid options that are not based on need.
Graduate students enrolled in master’s degree programs at Saint Joseph College are eligible to participate in the Federal Direct Loan program which is not based exclusively on financial need.
To be eligible to borrow funds under the Federal Direct Loan program you must:
• File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year
• Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• Not be in default on prior educational loans
• Maintain satisfactory academic progress
NOTICE: The Financial Aid Office at Saint Joseph College will not be able to disburse any financial aid until you have been officially admitted into the program for which you are applying.
How to Apply for Financial Aid
Step 1 Apply for a PIN (Personal Identification Number) online at www.pin.ed.gov. You must have your PIN prior to completing the FAFSA. The PIN serves as your electronic signature on the FAFSA and will also serve as your signature on the Master Promissory Note (MPN) when borrowing under the Direct Loan programs. E-mail is the quickest and easiest way to receive your PIN. When you receive your PIN, please be sure to print a copy to keep for your records. You will be able to use the same PIN in the future to apply electronically for student aid and access your U.S. Department of Education records. After you receive your PIN, you will be able to complete steps 2-4.
Step 2 Complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. You will need your PIN, your previous year's Federal Tax Return, and Saint Joseph College’s school code (001409) to complete your FAFSA online. All graduate students are considered independent for financial aid purposes. You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) when your application has been processed. The SJC Financial Aid Office will automatically receive your data electronically once it has been processed and will advise you of your eligibility as well as how to apply for and accept student loans. Please allow at least one week for processing.
Step 3 Complete the Off-Campus Master's Graduate Application for Financial Aid for the appropriate term(s) of enrollment. Initially, this form is included in your application materials, but also may be downloaded.

This form is required for all graduate students applying for Federal Direct Loans.
Step 4 Follow the instructions that SJC will provide to accept and apply for student loans . You will need your PIN to electronically sign your Master Promissory Note (MPN). The MPN is a promise to pay back any loans that you borrow while enrolled at Saint Joseph College. This is a Federal requirement for all student loan borrowers.

Federal Programs for Teachers
The Federal (Title 1) Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program:
If you and your school qualify, this program may provide loan forgiveness for eligible Federal Stafford Loans. This is a separate program requiring separate forms and processes. The U.S. Department of Education will determine your eligibility for this program. Saint Joseph College is not responsible to verify your eligibility for this or any other program. Please do not base your enrollment on this program as it can be difficult to ensure qualification for Government Programs, which are subject to reform and funding changes.
You must call 1-800-4-FED-AID to verify your eligibility or click here for more information.
The TEACH Grant:
The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Program provides up to $4,000 a year in grant assistance to students who are completing coursework towards certain high-need fields. In order to be eligible for a grant, a student must submit a FAFSA form and sign an Agreement to Serve as a full-time teacher at certain low-income schools and within certain high-need fields for at least four academic years within eight years after completing (or ceasing enrollment in) the course of study for which the candidate received a grant. The U.S. Department of Education will determine your eligibility for this program.
The TEACH Grant converts to an Unsubsidized Direct Loan if the student fails to complete any part of the obligation. The loan, plus interest, must be repaid. For more information and to sign the Agreement to Serve (ATS), click here.
If you are interested in applying for the TEACH Grant, please submit the SJC Teach Grant Application (PDF: 2pp., 89K) after completing the Agreement to Serve (ATS).
