Alumni Week 2021: Highlights

A few highlights from Alumni Week held September 27–October 2, 2021.

Opening Ceremonies

Welcome

A special welcome for Alumni Week from Santa Fe and Collegewide President Mark Roosevelt!

Q&A with College Leaders

You asked, and they answered. The warm welcome continues as college leaders answer your questions and give updates on how things are going at the college this fall.

Alumni Association Awards

Each year, the SJC Alumni Association bestows the Award of Merit on remarkable Johnnies and inducts honorary members into the Association’s ranks. Tia Pausic (A86), past president of the Association, sat down for virtual conversations with this year’s honorees. Hear their stories and join us in celebrating their achievements and welcome our new honorary colleagues!

Back to the Classroom

How to Read a Painting of a Face

Tutor Phil LeCuyer offers a reflection on “how to read a painting of a face,” looking at two paintings by Rembrandt and Van Gogh and how artists use asymmetry to access the abilities of the mind in unexpected ways.

Lab Revisited

The pandemic prompted classes to move online temporarily, and gave us the chance to tag along. In this video, originally prepared for a January Freshman lab practicum, two students walk us through Galileo’s “Little Balance”—an elaboration on Archimedes’ famous crown solution. Do the reading in advance, and then watch the practicum unfold in the classroom!
