BASIS.ed–BASIS Charter Schools–St. John's College Seminar Institute

Partnership with BASIS Charter Schools

Teacher education and professional development have been central to the mission of the Graduate Institute of St. John’s College since our founding more than 50 years ago as the “Teachers Institute for Liberal Education.” In 2019, we launched the inaugural BASIS Charter Schools—St. John’s College Seminar Institute for teachers, and are pleased to announce the partnership’s continuation in 2020. Over five weeks, BASIS Charter School participants will enroll in Graduate Institute classes, studying primary texts in discussion-based seminar settings. Enrolled students will earn six units of graduate credit.

Dates: June 15–July 17. Arrive by June 14 and depart July 18. Classes meet five days per week, Monday–Friday.

Location: St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland

Cost: Tuition, room, and board for selected BASIS teachers will be covered by BASIS.

Curriculum: BASIS Charter School teachers will participate in small, seminar-style classes along with other St. John’s graduate students, including many teachers and administrators at other K-12 schools. Participants will take the seminar and tutorial of one of two segments, either “Politics and Society” or “Mathematics and Natural Science.”

Application: Selected BASIS Charter School teachers should apply to St. John’s College. The application requires:

  • All official college and postgraduate transcripts
  • A response to two essay prompts assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant’s past education and how they hope to benefit from the program at SJC (typically four double-spaced pages in length).

Participants who attended the BED-BCS-SJC Seminar Institute in 2019 do not need to reapply to the College.
