Spring Semester Plans for Santa Fe: Quarantine and Isolation Guidelines

Isolation

Day 0 is your first day of symptoms or a positive viral test. Day 1 is the first full day after your symptoms developed or your test specimen was collected.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms, regardless of vaccination status:

  • Stay home for at least 5 days and away from others
  • If you have had symptoms and 5 days have passed, you may end isolation under these conditions:
    • You must be fever-free (100.4 or below) for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and your other symptoms must be improving.
    • You must wear a well-fitted mask for 5 additional days and should not go places where you are unable to wear a mask.
    • Perform a rapid test on Day 6 (after 5 full days of isolation) to confirm a negative result (test will be provided)
    • If result is positive or symptoms persist, isolation will end on Day 10.
    • If symptoms persist on Day 10, the Covid Care Coordinator will consult on next steps.
  • If you tested positive but never had symptoms, you may end your isolation after 5 days under these conditions:
    • Perform a rapid test on Day 6 (after 5 full days of isolation) to confirm a negative result (test will be provided)
    • You must wear a well-fitted mask for 5 additional days and should not go places where you are unable to wear a mask.
    • If result is positive, you may end your isolation on Day 10.

Isolation Locations

Off-campus students will not be provided an on-campus location to isolate and must make arrangements to isolate on their own.

On-campus students who test positive will be required to move to one of our on-campus isolation units.

  • Should our on-campus isolation units be full, students will be relocated to a local hotel.
  • Should the local hotel be full, students will be required to isolate in their room.
    • Students isolating in their room will be given strict instructions to avoid hall mates.
    • Hall mates will be required to test on day 3-5 after the student tests positive.

Exposure

The date of your exposure is considered day 0. Day 1 is the first full day after your last contact with a person who has COVID-19.

If you were exposed to COVID-19 and are vaccinated*:

  • Wear a well-fitted mask for 10 full days any time you are around others. Do not go to places where you are unable to wear a mask.
  • If you develop symptoms, isolate immediately and take a test.
  • If no symptoms develop, test on Day 5 to confirm your status.
    • If you test negative you should continue to must wear a well-fitted mask for 5 additional days, including when outside and around others, and should not go places where you are unable to wear a mask.
    • If result is positive, you will need to begin isolation immediately. Please note, a positive test starts the count of days for the isolation requirements.

If you were exposed to COVID-19 and are unvaccinated:

  • Arrangements must be made to quarantine off campus immediately. These arrangements and cost are the student’s responsibility. Unvaccinated students are not permitted to quarantine on campus.
  • Wear a well-fitted mask for 10 full days any time you are around others. Do not go to places where you are unable to wear a mask.
  • If you develop symptoms, isolate immediately and take a test.
  • Test on Day 5 to confirm your status.
    • If you test negative you should continue to must wear a well-fitted mask for 5 additional days, including when outside and around others, and should not go places where you are unable to wear a mask.
    • If result is positive, you will need to begin isolation immediately. Please note, a positive test re-starts the count of days for the isolation requirements.

*Individualized assessment about the need to quarantine will be made based upon a number of factors, including, but not limited to, vaccination and booster status, the nature of the contact, clinical presentation, and pre-existing medical conditions. Should a vaccinated student be told to quarantine, students may visit the dining hall to pick-up food but will be directed, in most cases, to not attend classes or other events or activities.
