Combined Degrees

BA + MA

Undergraduate students at St. John’s have a unique opportunity to study the great books at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. After earning a BA at St. John’s, students can enroll more easily and affordably in the Graduate Institute.

BA + Master of Arts in Eastern Classics (MAEC)

  • Open to all St. John’s graduates with a BA.
  • Application requirements shortened. See below.
  • Students who apply for need-based financial aid automatically receive a scholarship worth 25% of tuition (and more depending upon need).
  • Complete the degree in one year (fall, spring, and summer terms).

BA + Master of Arts in Liberal Arts (MALA)

  • Open to St. John’s graduates who received a BA at least five years earlier.
  • Application requirements shortened. See below.
  • Students who apply for need-based financial aid automatically receive a scholarship worth 25% of tuition (and more depending upon need).
  • Complete the degree in one year (fall, spring, and two summer terms), in two years (two fall and two spring terms), or part time over several years including any combination of fall, spring, and summer terms.

Application Requirements

As a St. John’s graduate, you know St. John’s and the Program. As a result, we have reduced some of the application requirements for BA recipients applying to the Graduate Institute.

Follow the application instructions with these exceptions:

  • Skip Essay A.
  • Attach a paper you wrote at St. John’s in lieu of Essay C. Pick your best work—even your senior essay.
  • Contact the Admissions Office to see if St. John’s has your college transcript.
  • Your two letters of recommendation may come from tutors at the college. We suggest it!

MA + JD

St. John’s partners with the University of Maryland Carey School of Law to allow students to earn a MA and JD within four years.

Master of Arts in Liberal Arts (MALA) + JD

  • Open to all students admitted to the MALA program at St. John’s and the JD program at the University of Maryland Carey School of Law.
  • Each institution accepts nine dual-degree credits from the other program. See more about MALA + JD program.
