Seminars will meet over Zoom, which is a free platform but must be downloaded to a device in advance. Students will need to be prepared to have their camera and microphone on to participate in every conversation.

Dates: Monday, June 24–Friday, June 28

Times: Each class below will be offered at 2 p.m. EST and 5 p.m. EST. Students will elect to enroll in either the afternoon or evening class of their choice, and will attend all classes during that selected session time.

Monday–Thursday: Classes will meet for a maximum of 2 hours, Monday–Thursday. Attendance is required for all class meetings, and students must have their camera on and should expect to participate in each class. Each class will include 90-minute seminars led by a St. John’s faculty member. Each class will also include an additional half-hour of time for academic mentoring, additional instruction, and informational exchanges with the faculty member and the current St. John’s student serving as the classroom assistant for the course.

Friday: Class will not meet on Friday. SA Online students will be invited to attend a group meeting with Admissions staff, classroom assistants (current SJC undergraduates), and other SA online participants to engage in an informational admissions and financial aid session and Q&A. The Friday meeting is highly recommended for all students interested in applying to St John’s.

Please see the edition and translation details in the session details above. St John’s will not provide the reading for the class. We encourage you to check out the book(s) from your local library, or purchase them from an independent bookstore. There are also electronic versions available for these texts online (both free and paid versions). St. John’s is a closely-knit community that values great books, small classes, and vigorous discussion. All classes are led by full-time faculty and assisted by current St. John’s College students. Unlike online education that relies on pre-recorded classes and lectures, our Summer Academy Online Series is live, experiential, and engages students in deep, meaningful conversation.

We require all students to be prompt and prepared for class. To adequately prepare for the seminar, we ask that all participants have read the assigned seminar reading two, or more, times. We recommend that all participants treat this opportunity just like a college course. Though SA Online is not a course for credit, these classes give students a closer look into the unique educational program at St. John’s. Participants of previous courses have been recommended by the Faculty for admission, which can greatly enhance their application. SA online participants have the opportunity to interview with Admissions after the completion of the course and will be guaranteed the opportunity to participate in our Discussion-Based Application process. Tuition for each session of the Summer Academy Online Series is $200.  All seminars are led by full-time faculty at St. John’s College, assisted by a current student.
