Appointments

All SHWC scheduling is by appointment only; we do not offer walk-in sessions. Please refer to the information below to learn how to access specific types of available appointments.

Counseling and Psychiatry Appointments

In Maryland, the age of consent for mental health treatment is 16 years old. This means that, if you are 16 or over, you can participate in mental health treatment without parental involvement. We do not provide any services to those under 16 years old.

For both counseling and psychiatry services, students must first complete an initial intake evaluation with an SJC counselor. At this appointment, we will clarify your needs and our ability to meet those needs (including clinician availability at the time). The counselor may then refer you, as requested/appropriate, to our staff psychiatrist. Please note that, on a case-by-case basis, ongoing therapy (either with an SJC counselor or an outpatient therapist with whom our psychiatrist can have regular contact) may be required to see the psychiatrist through Counseling & Wellness Services.

We schedule on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are interested in requesting a counseling and/or psychiatry appointment, please go to your Student Health Portal, log in using your mySJC account credentials, and read/complete the “Mental Health Treatment Interest Form” and the subsequently auto-generated additional paperwork. We will reach out to you to schedule an intake assessment with a counselor if/when we have appropriate clinician availability that matches your provided availability.

For ongoing services, your assigned clinician will work with you directly to schedule appointments after you have submitted the yearly paperwork.

Regular attendance for sessions is a crucial piece of getting help with the issue that brings you to us. Due to this fact and the demand for mental health services, Counseling and Wellness Services has an Attendance Policy to help ensure that you are getting the treatment you need and that other clients are not missing out on services they could be receiving. In addition, you are responsible for coming to your session on time. If you are late, your appointment will still need to end on time. If you are more than 15 minutes late, your appointment may be rescheduled.

Serenity Space Appointments

Students may call the SHWC at 410-626-2553 to schedule time in the Serenity Space. These 45-minute appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Medical Appointments

Students are able to schedule medical appointments by phone at 410-626-2553 or via email at annapolis.healthcenter(at)sjc.edu. Same-day appointments are reserved for urgent medical problems and acute illnesses. You may be asked the nature of your visit to best ensure ample time and quality care. Scheduled appointments and telehealth appointments are available for non-urgent medical problems. For all medical appointments, patients:

  • Must have a form of identification;
  • Must have their health insurance card or a copy of the insurance card; and
  • Are expected to arrive five minutes prior to scheduled appointment times to verify health insurance and confirm/update personal information. You may be asked to reschedule your appointment if you are more than 10 minutes late.

Cancellation and Missed Appointments Policy

If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, we require that you provide us with at least 24 hours’ notice. For counseling and psychiatry appointments, please notify your clinician by email. For Serenity Space and medical appointments, please call the SHWC at 410-626-2553.

Cancellation with less than 24 hours’ notice is considered a late cancellation. A no-show occurs when you miss your appointment and fail to provide any prior notification of your absence. No-shows will result in a no-show fee of $10 (ten dollars) per occurrence. Both late cancellations and no-shows are considered “missed appointments.”
