Mark Your Calendars for Our 2027 Summer Visual Arts Program in 'America's Most Creative City'
The eight-week program in “the most creative city in America” will provide opportunities to explore some of the greatest movies, paintings, and photographs in the European and American traditions.
Santa Fe, NM [October 26, 2026] — The Graduate Institute at St. John’s College Santa Fe has announced the launch of a new Summer Visual Arts Program, a comprehensive eight-week program including seminars, tutorials, a preceptorial, and a lab component. In Santa Fe, which researchers recently dubbed “the most creative city in the United States” thanks to its art openings, galleries, and museums, students will have opportunities to learn about great works of visual art and explore profound questions about the artworks they study together on and off campus.
“The Summer Visual Arts Program extends the distinctive approach to learning of St. John’s College to a broader community of learners. By bringing together great works of art, classics, and thoughtful conversations, the program invites students to experience how the St. John’s way of learning can open new ways of seeing, questioning, and understanding the world,” says St. John’s College President J. Walter Sterling. “We are delighted to offer an opportunity in which the arts become not simply objects of appreciation, but invitations to the kind of inquiry and conversation at the heart of the St. John’s education.”
Students will examine some of the greatest movies, paintings, and photographs in the European and American traditions, while reading and discussing a selection of classic readings in aesthetics. In addition to learning from the greatest artists in the Western tradition, students will also perform basic exercises in drawing, sketching, and composition to discover what they learn from the artworks and see from the world around themselves. The program will visit works of various artists and thinkers—from Plato to Heidegger, da Vinci to Rothko, Atget to Arbus, Keaton to Lynch.
“The new Summer Visual Arts Program is the result of many years of planning on the part of tutors who, for over a decade, have been leading study groups, preceptorials, and Summer Classics courses on film, photography, and painting at the college,” says David Carl, Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in Santa Fe. “We’re excited that our work in these areas can now be expanded to include interested students, alumni, and friends of the college who want to experience how the St. John’s Great Books style of discussion-based learning can be extended beyond great works of literature, philosophy, history, science, mathematics, and music to include some of the greatest works of visual art ever created. Our hope is that, through conversation and shared looking, watching, and seeing, we will become better, deeper, and more thoughtful experiencers of the works of art we encounter throughout our lives.”
The Summer Visual Arts Program will be held from June 14 through August 6, 2027. Although the program is not-for-credit and not part of the degree-granting Master of Liberal Arts (MALA) program, MALA graduate students who are currently enrolled at the Santa Fe campus can earn three preceptorial credits for completion of the Summer Visual Arts Preceptorial. The St. John’s College Graduate Institute offers three Master of Arts degrees: the Liberal Arts, exploring the classic texts of the West; Eastern Classics, focusing on texts of India, China, and Japan; and Middle Eastern Classics, exploring texts of the Jewish and Islamic traditions. Applications are currently being accepted for 2027. For more details and to apply, visit sjc.edu/academic-programs/graduate.
St. John’s College also offers lifelong learning programs throughout the year. Winter Classics provides an opportunity for week-long seminars online in January, and Summer Classics are available online or in person in Santa Fe in July. Registration for Winter Classics 2027 will open on October 29, 2026.
